Down Time: Light Touch Approach
Another new feature of Screen Time is called Downtime. It helps clients get some downtime away from their technology. We can schedule it perhaps maybe in the evenings and in any app that is not whitelisted like Messages, FaceTime and Phone will always be disabled, so we’re going ahead and turn downtime on. Now, we go back to the home screen and see all of the apps are grayed out and we can’t tap into them without getting an alert, and there’s that little Screen Time icon just to the left. When they open it up, it’ll let they know they’ve already reached the time limit for those apps. Apple doesn’t want to completely prohibit them from getting into the apps. It’s the phone, they can do what they like, so there’s always a way to bypass this restriction without having to go into the settings. They can simply hit ‘Remind Me in 15 Minutes’ or ‘Ignore Limit for Today’. I want to play around in the app for just a little bit longer, so I’m just going to go ahead hit Remind Me in 15 Minutes, Screen time will allow me access to the apps and I can play and wait until boom I get that alert saying “Hey, they’ve already reached the limit for the day.” It’s a very gentle way of reminding them to get some downtime away from the phone and not spend the whole time glued to the screen.
