Big push for all services to go online we need to get everyone onboard!

Australia’s Digital Future Is Leaving Some People Behind

Australia is racing toward a digital-first society.
From myGov to Medicare, Centrelink to the ATO, our essential services are now online—and guarded by mandatory Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), Passkeys, and apps like myGovID.

It’s meant to make life safer, faster, and easier.

But for many Australians—especially the elderly, people with disabilities, and those with low digital skills—the system is becoming a locked door, with no key.

Locked Out, Left Behind

In 2025, staying connected requires:

  • A smart device

  • Secure logins, biometrics, and SMS codes

  • Comfort using apps like myGov and Medicare

  • Ability to recover locked accounts

But not everyone can.
Many people are quietly falling off the system because:

  • They can’t afford a modern phone or tablet

  • They don’t understand two-step logins or Passkeys

  • Physical or cognitive disabilities make tech frustrating or impossible

  • They have no one to help when something breaks

Even simple things like installing a free app now requires an active Apple ID or Google Play account.
If your Apple ID is unpaid—even by accident—you can't even download free apps like Medicare or My Health Record.
(Apple Support, 2024: If your Apple ID is unpaid, app downloads are blocked)

In other words, no working Apple ID = no access to free essential services.

The Human Cost of Digital Progress

We are already seeing:

  • Missed Medicare claims

  • Seniors unable to access Centrelink or telehealth

  • People cut off from payments and medical care

  • Silent disengagement in aged care, disability housing, and rural areas

There’s no protest. Just quiet suffering.

What Needs to Change

If digital access is mandatory, then:

  • Devices must be properly set up for special needs

  • Personal tech help must be part of aged care, disability support, and welfare services

  • There must be exceptions and low-tech options for those who simply cannot comply

Digital safety should not come at the price of human dignity.

How customised ICT support can be transformative for individuals with disabilities, going far beyond standard IT services to create a truly empowering digital environment. The sources argue that this type of support must be delivered in the client's home to be truly effective.

Here are some key points from the sources that highlight the complexity of this work and the significant positive impact it can have:

  • Understanding the Client's Needs: ICT specialists must have a deep understanding of the client's condition, capacity, skills, and goals. This involves assessing their physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities, and how these may evolve.

  • Tailoring Solutions: Based on this understanding, the specialist designs and implements a customised technology ecosystem. This includes:

    • Selecting appropriate hardware and software.

    • Configuring accessibility features and assistive technologies.

    • Integrating devices and platforms from different ecosystems like Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

    • Automating routine tasks and setting up personalised workflows.

  • Addressing Unique Challenges: Unlike standard IT services, ICT specialists are equipped to handle the complex needs of individuals with disabilities. They can:

    • Configure devices to work around disabilities.

    • Bridge skill gaps and provide training to users and caregivers.

    • Ensure compliance with accessibility standards and regulations.

    • Adapt solutions as online requirements change.

  • In-Home Support is Crucial: Delivering support in the client's home allows the specialist to:

    • Assess the living space and optimise technology for that environment.

    • Test setups in real-time and ensure everything works seamlessly.

    • Integrate technology into the client's daily routines.

    • Provide personalised training in a familiar setting.

    • Troubleshoot problems more effectively.

  • Transformative Impact: Customised ICT support empowers individuals with disabilities to:

    • Increase their independence and participate more fully in society.

    • Access online services, education, and employment opportunities.

    • Manage their health and well-being more effectively.

Emphasise the long-term cost benefits of tailored ICT support. While the initial investment may seem high, it leads to significant savings over time by:

  • Reducing the need for physical services and paid assistance.

  • Optimising support planning and preventing wasted resources.

  • Enabling access to online services that promote independence and reduce reliance on community programs.

By showcasing the complexity of your work and the profound positive impact it has on your clients' lives, you can effectively demonstrate the value of your services on your website.
